Many people don’t realize the role your gut plays in keeping you healthy and thriving. Your gut health impacts your entire body in some serious ways. Eating a gut-friendly diet can greatly improve your overall health so that you feel amazing and look sexy AF, and who doesn’t want that?
Here are some ways your gut interacts with other body systems.
Metabolism and Weight Loss
If you are trying to lose weight and boost your metabolism, your gut health is super important. The way your digestive system processes the food you eat can determine whether it’s “Yay, I lost 10 lbs!” or “WTF, I gained 10 lbs?” in your weight loss journey. When your gut bacteria are out of balance, sometimes even though you may not have symptoms, your body will hold onto weight despite your best efforts to lose it.
One gut bacteria, my favorite one, Akkermansia muciniphhila, is often low or even missing altogether in people that struggle with obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Rebalancing the gut microbiome and rebuilding this one bacteria can make a massive difference if you find yourself struggling to lose weight. Similarly, bloating is one of the most common complaints I get from my clients and the water that accompanies bloating can also add unwanted lbs to your frame.
Keep an eye on your gut health when you’re trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. You can get gut health testing done to be sure that your gut microbiome isn’t the cause of your unsuccessful weight loss efforts. If you’re doing the work, you want the reward.
Immune System
A large part of your immune system is located in your digestive tract. Your gut microbiome, the amazing system of bacteria that helps you break down the foods you eat also serves as a protective mechanism against harmful substances like opportunistic bacteria and toxins. If you don’t have a healthy gut, these bacteria are less effective at fighting off threats to your health.
Some cancer cells originate in your digestive system. When everything is in proper balance, beneficial gut bacteria can fight these dangerous cells to keep you healthy. When your gut is imbalanced, those beneficial gut bacteria aren’t there in substantial enough numbers to act as guards to the castle gate. So, toxins and pathogenic bacteria are allowed to cause trouble because who’s going to stop them? This is often the root cause of autoimmune diseases and other serious illnesses.
Brain Health and Mood
The gut-brain connection is becoming so clear in the medical literature. It is now known that there is a strong link between your gut and your brain, and this affects your mood greatly. In real life, an imbalanced gut can lead to depression, anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, and panic attacks.

Sleep and Energy
Digestive health and sleep impact each other in various ways. When you suffer from digestive pain, discomfort, and bloating, it makes it much harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Additionally, gut bacteria may also influence normal sleep patterns by helping create important chemical messengers in the brain, such as serotonin and dopamine.
Without a healthy night’s sleep, you’ll feel like a brain-dead dog the next day. Over time, chronic sleep deprivation can have serious health consequences such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart attack, heart failure or stroke. Other problems resulting from too few ZZZs can include obesity, depression, reduced immune system function and lower sex drive. Lower. Sex. Drive. Yikes!
Having a good balance of healthy bacteria in your gut can make all of the difference in your sleep quality. If you need to get more quality shut-eye each night, consider working to fix your digestive health.
Clear Skin
The foods you eat greatly impact your complexion. Texture, redness, inflammation, and some skin conditions can all stem from poor digestive health. That’s right… your gut microbiome can make you look like a hormonal teenager! How? An imbalanced gut and/or leaky gut can lead to inflammation and the release of inflammatory messengers which can contribute to the development of acne. When you have a lot of inflammation and an upset GI tract, your skin will suffer, no doubt.
Now, you know just how important good gut health is in order to live your most awesome life. You’re probably wondering how you can go about addressing these problems, right?
